Mineral Tiles

OWA mineral suspended ceiling tiles for exposed and semi-concealed tee grids

OWA manufactures mineral fibre ceiling tiles at its factory in Amorbach, Germany. The wet-felt production process incorporates mineral wool with other raw materials. We only use natural, sustainable, and renewable raw materials, the majority from local sources. For over 25 years our unique formulation has incorporated green binders, resulting in ceiling tiles that contain up to 12% starch. Our tile composition and bio-soluble mineral wool contribute to the overall product quality.

We vary the tile thickness and density to meet different specification criteria. For instance, a lower-density tile offers superior sound absorption, while a denser tile is more effective for sound insulation and fire resistance. The tiles are available with various surface finishes and face patterns. Painted tiles typically have small holes (needling) or fissures to enhance sound absorption. On the other hand, premium fleece-covered tiles have a smooth, continuous surface. Sound passes through the fleece and absorbs into the tile.

The products undergo regular testing and inspections by independent institutes. The mineral wool meets all national and international standards and holds the RAL Seal of Quality. Additionally, the tiles have very low levels of emissions, far below the common indoor air quality certifications such as French VOC and Blue Angel. Our OWAcoustic mineral tiles have extremely low emissions, with formaldehyde levels below 5 µg/m³, compared to the E1 limit value of 124 µg/m³, as per BS EN 13964 standards. They also exhibit excellent fire-resistant properties compared to other materials with lower density.

Suitability

Mineral fibre tiles are widely used in commercial, educational, healthcare, and retail buildings. Some of the notable features applicable to these environments include:

  • Sound absorption: Fully painted or textured sand-covered tiles do not offer effective sound absorption. Tiles need surface perforations or fissures to absorb sound efficiently. Most public spaces require a minimum of class C absorption. For example, the ‘Sandila/N’ painted, needled, sand-covered tile offers class C absorption, while the smooth, fleece-covered tile ‘Brillianto A’ provides class A absorption.
  • Sound insulation: A denser and thicker tile offers better sound insulation, though this may compromise sound absorption. For spaces that require both, such as consulting rooms or boardrooms, ‘Sinfonia Privacy‘ provides up to 40 dB insulation along with class C absorption.
  • Humidity resistance: Environments with high humidity, such as kitchens and bathrooms, require tiles that can withstand such conditions. Standard mineral tiles may sag and become susceptible to mould in humid spaces. Therefore, OWA offers a tile with 100% RH resistance called ‘Ocean‘.
  • Hygienic ceiling tiles: Certain healthcare environments require ceilings that can resist germs and are easy to clean. The ‘Humancare’ range has a surface treatment to prevent fungus, bacteria, and mould growth. These tiles are also moisture resistant. Therefore, they are easy to wipe clean and disinfect, making them ideal for hospitals, doctors’ surgeries, or dentists.
