What is a monolithic ceiling?

A monolithic ceiling is a continuous ceiling that covers the whole room. A traditional plasterboard ceiling is monolithic. But decorated plasterboard does not offer any sound absorption. So, rooms can be noisy and echoey without any soft furnishings, i.e. carpet, curtains and upholstered furniture.

OWA offers two types of monolithic solutions. Our OWAplan systems are like an MF ceiling, i.e. large format boards that screw to a suspended metal grid. These boards are taped and jointed, then decorated. However, our OWAplan70 and OWAplan90 boards are less dense and offer acoustic absorption. Once all the joints are sealed, an acoustic plaster slurry is sprayed onto the boards. The plaster does not create a sealed surface. It is still permeable. Thus, sound can pass through and absorb into the boards. Our standard acoustic plaster is white, but we also offer colour plaster to any specific RAL colour. But a minimum order quantity will apply. The final acoustic plaster finish is similar to a fine sand covered ceiling tile. Like an acoustic ceiling tile, the surface cannot be painted. If it is, the sound absorbing properties will be affected.

Second, we also offer a natural, bare mineral wool board. RAW concrete as its name suggests, has an industrial look. The surface pits resemble rendered concrete, and because the boards are natural and unpainted, they can vary in appearance. Again, like an MF ceiling, the RAW boards screw to a suspended metal grid. But, this time, we do not tape and fill the board joints. They remain visible along with the fixings.

Both solutions will aid speech intelligibility and improve sound clarity for staff, students or customers.

Where to use

Large open plan offices, hotels or leisure facilities, like bars and restaurants, can be noisy environments. So, such spaces need methods of sound absorption to reduce unwanted noise. An acoustic monolithic ceiling will help to absorb some of that sound. Thus, it can create a more productive, relaxing and comfortable environment.

Either monolithic design will add style to any commercial, public, retail or leisure space. Therefore, architects and designers can use contemporary colours to create stunning, unique ceilings while enhancing room aesthetics.
