What is a ceiling tile?

Ceiling tiles lay into a suspended ceiling grid to create a modular system. The suspended ceiling is a secondary ceiling hanging below the existing, soffit or roof. The most common module size for a ceiling tile in the UK is 600x600 mm. But, a lay-in tile will be smaller than the module size. The actual size of a lay-in tile is usually 594x594 mm or 595x595 mm. However, the actual size of a clip-in tile will be similar to the module size, i.e. 600x600 mm. Another popular module size in the UK is 1200x600 mm. Although, many other standard sizes and custom sizes are available. Please get in touch to see if we can help.

Ceiling tile materials

Ceiling tiles are generally made from mineral wool (sometimes called mineral fibre), metal, gypsum or timber. OWA manufactures and supplies both mineral wool and metal ceiling tiles.

Mineral wool / fibre ceiling tiles

  • Our tiles use natural and sustainable raw materials sourced locally
  • Bio-soluble, featuring starch and clay
  • Dense and rigid board, very low emission levels
  • By varying the density of our mineral wool, we can manage the acoustic absorption or sound insulation
  • Excellent reaction to fire properties, a2-s1,d0
  • Plain and needled surfaces
  • Painted, sand or fleece covered surfaces
  • Square edge, tegular edge and microlook edge
  • White, black, grey and colours available (fleece)
  • Humidity resistant tiles available
  • Hygienic tiles available
  • Washable tiles available

Metal ceiling tiles

  • Our standard tiles are powder coated galvanised steel
  • More durable than a mineral fibre tile and can be handled frequently. They will last longer, won’t crack, chip, break or stain
  • They won’t need to be replaced as often, saving money in the long run
  • Easier to clean and wipe compared to a mineral tile
  • Modern, contemporary or industrial depending on the material, colour and surface chosen
  • Concealed clip-in tiles and systems available, including security
  • Concealed hook-on tiles, panels and systems available
  • Plain tiles have very good hygienic properties
  • Suitable for cleanrooms, ISO1 and ISO2
  • Positive / negative pressurised room solution
  • Can easily be recycled locally
